Hindu Temple of Central Iowa is located on the banks of Des Moines River 4 miles South of Madrid Township on Hyway 17, HTCC offers a peaceful and serene environment for Meditation and Prayers. This temple was inaugurated, in June 2005. and serves Hindus and people of other faiths with colorful festivals and events celebrated with devotion and reverence.

  • Established: The temple was founded in 2005 after construction spanning three years.
  • Purpose: It serves as a place of worship for Hindus in central Iowa and aims to unite the community. Visitors are welcome, regardless of their faith.
  • Deities: The temple is considered primarily Vaishnavite, focusing on Vishnu (specifically, a form known as Balaji or Venkateshwara) as the central deity. However, it houses shrines to a variety of Hindu gods and goddesses, reflecting the diverse beliefs within the Hindu community.
  • Location: Situated four miles south of Madrid, at the intersection of Highway 17 and the Des Moines River. 
Services and Activities:
  • Worship: The temple follows Vedic traditions and rituals. Daily scriptures readings, weekly ritual bathings (abhishekam) and worship (puja), and monthly rituals dedicated to various deities are performed.
  • Festivals: HTCC celebrates major Indian religious and cultural festivals like Diwali and Holi. For example, a recent Holi celebration included temple tours, a fire ritual, the throwing of colored powder, and dancing.
  • Cultural Events: HTCC also offers cultural opportunities, like the BalaVihar Annual Academic Competitions, which have included events such as essay writing, drawing, speech, spelling bee, and talent competitions.
  • Community Services: The Hindu Cultural and Educational Center, which is associated with HTCC, aims to provide refugee services and cultural education, including classes in Nepali and Sanskrit, citizenship preparation, and ESL classes.
  • Food Service: Every weekend many volunteers cook delicious vegetarian food which is then served to visitors for a fee of $10 per meal.  The amount is used for upkeep of the temples and supports other activities of the temple.
