History

The Sri Venkata Krishna Temple has a history rooted in the 800-year-old Udupi Sri Puthige Matha tradition of India, which was established by the philosopher Sri Madhvacharya.

The temple’s journey in Southern California progressed through three main stages:
1. Founding in West Hills (2004)
The temple was established in July 2004 by His Holiness 1008 Sri Sri Sugunendra Theertha Swamiji, the 29th pontiff of the Udupi Sri Puthige Matha. It originally opened as Sri Krishna Brundavanam in a small location in the West Hills area of Los Angeles.
2. Move to Woodland Hills (2007)
As the community grew, the place of worship moved in May 2007 to a larger, owned facility in Woodland Hills. During this period, it continued to serve as a center for the Udupi Sampradaya, offering traditional South Indian rituals and vegetarian meals.
3. Permanent Location in Thousand Oaks (2015)
In June 2015, the temple transitioned to its current permanent home—a 15-acre site at 2770 Borchard Road, Thousand Oaks (Newbury Park).
  • Grand Opening: The formal opening ceremony took place on June 28, 2015, attended by roughly 750 people.
  • Name Change: During this ceremony, Swamiji officially renamed the organization from “Sri Krishna Brundavanam” to “Sri Venkata Krishna Temple”.
  • Facility: The current property was previously the Living Hope Church of the Nazarene and now features a 17,000-square-foot built-up area including a pooja hall, prasaada hall, and a multi-purpose community hall.
Spiritual Lineage
The temple is one of several international branches of the Puthige Matha, one of the eight mathas (Ashta Mathas) of Udupi. It operates under the Sujnana Religious and Charitable Foundation
