History

The history of All World Gayatri Pariwar (AWGP) in the Los Angeles area is rooted in a global spiritual movement that began in India and expanded to Southern California through local community initiatives and landmark events.
Foundational Origins (1940s–1971)
  • Founder: The AWGP was founded by Pandit Shriram Sharma Acharya (1911–1990), a social reformer and spiritual scholar.
  • Establishment: The movement took concrete form in 1940 (or 1958 depending on the specific organizational milestone) with the mission of “Yug Nirman Yojana” (Movement for the Reconstruction of the Era).
  • Headquarters: In 1971, the spiritual headquarters, Shantikunj, was established in Haridwar, India, to serve as a global hub for “Scientific Spirituality”.
Expansion to Los Angeles (1980–1993)
  • Early Presence (1980): The Gayatri Mandir in Hawaiian Gardens was established in June 1980 by prominent Indian community members under the guidance of Pandit Shriram Sharma Acharya to serve the spiritual needs of followers in the Greater Los Angeles area.
  • A Landmark Event (1993): A pivotal moment for the Los Angeles chapter was the Ashwamedha Yagna held in September 1993. This sacred fire ceremony attracted over 8,000 devotees from across North America and is credited with paving the way for the large-scale renewal of Gayatri consciousness in the U.S..
Evolution of the Gayatri Chetna Center (Anaheim)
  • Growth: What began as a small community gathering grew into the current Gayatri Chetna Center in Anaheim.
  • Modern Mission: Today, the center operates under the global leadership of Dr. Pranav Pandya and Shrimati Shailbala Pandya (the founders’ daughter). It focuses on the “three-pronged approach” of Upasana (prayer), Sadhana (self-refinement), and Aradhana (service).
  • Current Status: The Anaheim location now serves as a multifaceted cultural and spiritual hub, hosting daily rituals, educational “Bal Sanskaar” programs for youth, and scientific-spiritual seminars.
