History

The history of the Shree Swaminarayan Gurukul Rajkot Sansthan centers on its 1948 founding in India and its 21st-century expansion into San Antonio.

Founding and Early Years (India)

  • Establishment (1947–1948): Founded by Shastriji Maharaj Shri Dharmajivandasji Swami in Rajkot, Gujarat, in the year of India’s independence.
  • Inspiration: During a pilgrimage to the Himalayas in 1946, Shastriji Maharaj was inspired to revive the ancient “Gurukul” tradition to blend modern classroom education with spiritual and moral values (Sadvidya).
  • First Classes: Teaching officially began on June 16, 1948, with just seven students in a rented bungalow in Rajkot.
  • Growth: In October 1948, the foundation stone for the main campus was laid, and the organization expanded rapidly to include printing presses, dairy farms (Gaushala), and medical services.

Expansion to San Antonio

The San Antonio branch is part of the Sansthan’s global expansion under the current spiritual leader, Guruvarya Shri Devkrushnadasji Swami.
  • Bal Sanskar Program (2018): Educational activities in San Antonio began in 2018 with the establishment of Bal Sanskar classes. These classes initially met in an instructor’s home before a dedicated center was secured as participation grew.
  • Mandir Establishment: The San Antonio branch officially operates as a socio-spiritual non-profit and temple affiliated with the Rajkot headquarters, serving the local Hindu community through religious services and youth education.

Leadership Timeline

  • 1948–1974: Led by the founder, Shastriji Maharaj.
  • 1974–Present: Administrative duties were handed to Guruvarya Shri Devkrushnadasji Swami, who currently oversees all global branches, including San Antonio.
